Dick Higgins | Invocations of Canyons and Boulders

Dick Higgins
Invocations of Canyons and Boulders
New York City, USA: Fluxus, 1965
9.3 x 12 x 2.9 cm
Clear plastic box with 16mm film loop
Edition size unknown

Dedicated to Stan Brakhage, Higgins' film loop (a close-up on a mouth) was featured in several Fluxus newspapers and price lists, and several different packagings of the work exist, though none contain a label by George Maciunas designed specifically for the work. The below version features an ill-fitting 'monogram' by Maciunas, and some versions have what appear to be film stills as the box cover.

A VHS version in the Silverman collection is listed as being 5 minutes long, but the multiple version is more likely to have been the length of the loop shown here.

OCAD Library Used Book Sale

OCAD Library is hosting a used book sale fundraiser this week in the lobby of the school, at 100  McCaul Street, Toronto. It began yesterday and runs until Friday, March 1st, from 9am to 5pm.

"Amazing art and design books at amazing prices" promises the website, with books that "are mostly duplicate copies of titles in the OCAD U Library, donated by alumni, faculty and friends."

Lots of AGO and Power Plant catalogues, I'm told, and "and a couple of old precious things".

Released three years later, the book contains her observations in the form of a surveillance log, accompanied by her photographs.

Fiona Banner | The Nam

Fiona Banner
The Nam
London, UK: Frith Street Books, 1997
[1000] pp., 28 x 21cm., softcover
Edition of 1000, 100 of which were bound in hardcover

The Nam is a thousand pages of continuous, undivided text (280,000 words) in which the artist describes six Vietnam War movies simultaneously: Apocalypse Now, Born on the Fourth of July, The Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, and Platoon. After a proofreaderconcluded that the book was unreadable Banner had posters printed declaring it as such.

"This is not just an artist’s book but a multiple. It is insistently an object: its 1,000 leaves on 80 gsm Redwood Part Mechanical paper, in an intimidating pave 28 x 21 x6 cm format, weighs 2.388 kg. It defies traditional assumptions about the book and text; it is un-paragraphed, un-paginated and un-chaptered. It could be a flip book but it fails to generate the main characteristic of that format since any kinetic qualities are dulled by the almost constant appearance of the page. The heavy 16/17 point Helvetica typeface hammers out an unrelenting, breathless present – we are there too, but not there, can never be there, trapped in a simulation of a simulation.

If the artist’s task is to take us see the world around us differently, Fiona Banner’s The Nam, like Douglas Gordon’s slowed films, interrogates the nature of film (or is it video? One suspects the text might have been generated from the freezed frames of that medium) and our experience of it. What is cinema? What isn’t? Does the audience constantly remake the film it watches? How does the written text relate to sound (further problematized by the taped pieces of the installation) and vision? This audience, at least, remains spellbound."

- Stephen Bury, Art Monthly, 1997

Hans-Peter Feldmann | All the Clothes of a Woman

Hans-Peter Feldmann
All the Clothes of a Woman
Dusseldorf, Germany / Toronto, Canada : Feldmann Verlag / Art Metropole, 1999
[44] pp., 19 x 11 cm., softcover
Edition size unknown

"The photographs in this book, taken in 1974, show one woman's entire wardrobe."

A special edition of 30 copies included an additional image tipped into the title page.

Mikkel Carl: I guess Alle Kleider eine Frau wasn’t all her clothes, so I would much like to know how your logic of selection works, here and in general?

Hans-Peter Feldmann: It actually was all her clothes. Forty years ago it was a different story, people didn’t have all that much. She actually had step into another room and change, while I was doing the photography.

MC: All right, I’ll put it in another way: “Could it have been any woman?”

HPF: No, the work was about this woman. If I had come on to her in the streets, or somewhere else, she would probably have slapped me in the face, whereas with this approach it was all a bit more sophisticated. I got really close to her; do you know what I mean? Alle Kleider eine Frau was all about the woman, not the clothes. Anyway, I take things, I arrange them in a certain way, and that’s it. For instance, I go and put two spoons in a soup plate. You can call it what you want, but I call it “two spoons in a soup plate”. There’s no need for any other name, since we’re all quite familiar with the concept of one spoon. Making art is like eating a tomato, either you fancy its taste, or you don’t.
